First and foremost, I recommended this if you're looking for an action movie. I wouldn't say it's like one of the best of all time or anything, but it is a well structured action film. The action scenes are entertaining enough and the story moves along quickly enough that it keeps you from feeling bored.

I appreciate that this movie has purely villainous bad guys because it helps you sit back and enjoy the action. This is definitely more in the "popcorn" category of movie than the critical thought provoking category, but like I said, that's what it's setting out to be. By leaning into this style of character, they do a better job of making a fun movie since you can easily get behind the "good guys".

This movie _made_ the song popular; the main character is Axel Foley so there can be no doubt the two are linked very directly. It's just a banger from the deep 80's which is why it's used as a meme, so I can't really dock them points for that!

He could easily have either had them in his hand in the scene or have dropped them outside, but by not showing that it shook me out of the experience and reminded me I was watching a movie. We can give him the benefit of the doubt that he did put it down somewhere, but it's distracting because it's not explicitly shown.
### The Director (Martin Brest)
I hadn't heard of the director before so I looked him up and found some interesting things. He has only directed a handful of films, but virtually all of them were well received (at least on IMDb where they all clock in above 7.0) with one exception.

The only one I knew of besides _Beverly Hills Cop_ was [_Meet Joe Black_](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119643/) which is another movie I haven't seen but have been meaning to. It's basically in the exact same category for me as _Beverly Hills Cop_ was because I know the name from various references but have never seen it. He directed [_Midnight Run_](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095631/) which I've heard of and [_Scent of a Woman_](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105323) which I don't know, but which clocks in at 8.0 on IMDb!
Curious about his other films, I decided to check his most recent credit and saw he directed one in 2003 called [_Gigli_](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299930/). I figured if he hadn't made one since then he must've retired, and it seems like that one was a career ender. It's 2.6 on IMDb which I think is honestly the lowest score I've ever seen. [Rotten tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gigli) gave it a 6%. If you look up the plot it's not hard to guess why, but apparently the acting and script in general are also terrible. It swept the [Razzies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24th_Golden_Raspberry_Awards) that year.
It's interesting to me that someone can make back to back movies that are critically and generally well received, but then suddenly make a completely tone deaf, horrible movie. It's not even like he made one or two well received movies; he made 6 by my count. Then suddenly he just drops one of the worst movies ever.

## Recommendation
Horror is sometimes a difficult genre to persuade people to watch. Many people make a blanket claim to never watch horror movies, but to those people I offer up _Fright Night_ as a gateway into the genre. This movie strikes a great balance between more comedic or light hearted elements along with sinister horror. Most of the levity comes from Colin Farrell leaning into and really hamming it up as the movies antagonist.
@ -34,3 +42,4 @@ I appreciate that this movie pays close attention to the aspects of vampire lore
Just to name a few we have: _vampiric seduction_ in the night club scene, vampires "turning" characters, sunlight killing vampires, garlic and crosses, _vampiric immortality_, _vampire thralls_, and loads of discussion about the various ways to kill vampires. There are even some jokes about Twilight thrown in just to make sure all of their bases are covered. I appreciate that they made the movie chock-a-block full of vampire lore, and used those discussions for jokes and fun action set pieces.
The most fun part of the movie in my opinion is when the vampires are attacking them in Peter Vincent's pent house. The scene gives Amy and Charley an opportunity to throw every vampire killing technique in the book at them. It sets up a super corny bit of dialog about silver bullets only working on werewolves which I enjoyed. It's also fun to see the payoff for all of the ways that Peter Vincent explains one could kill a vampire in a preceding scene.

I could go either way on this film when it comes to a recommendation. I think its plot and characters are well suited for child viewers which is probably why I remembered it so fondly. As an adult I'm not sure I would recommend watching it. Many of the characters are fairly one dimensional and aren't always given enough time to interact with one another to earn the emotional payoffs that are set up.

At that time I was more confused why he agreed with the remark that was clearly intended to be derogatory, but didn't consider it deeper than that.
Anyway, I think it's just a poorly written scene, based on a low effort gender normative joke, but I'm trying to decide what is happening in the back half of that scene with Mr. Sir's response and the crowd's "oh"-ing.

This movie gets a recommendation from me, but I have a few specific things that perhaps bias my opinion. As a flat sci-fi action movie, I think this film works. I guess my only real issue with the film is that it gets to the point about redistributing the wealth and how the system just keeps altering to eventually put the power back into the hands of the few. At one point they even talk about how it will take several generations for the social order to recover if they redistribute all of the wealth, but the problem is that the social order is going to eventually go back to how it was because they aren't planning to change the system.
I would've preferred an ending where the characters change the system rather than simply trying to redistribute the wealth while keeping wages in place. It might end up being too utopian a slant to be entertaining, but the actual ending where they are just robbing bigger and bigger banks felt a bit hollow to me. They don't actually solve any of the problems that the society has in place.

One of the major differences between this film and the original is that it has magic performances thrown in for seemingly no reason. In the original, magic was used for a few specific reasons on top of it simply being entertaining for a viewing audience.
The film uses magic to establish each character. We learn about their background and abilities through an entertaining magical performance at the beginning, and each is in a natural setting where it makes sense for them to be performing. We learn that Atlas is a famous and arrogant traditional magician, Henley is a nonconventional but talented stage performer, McKinney is a down on his luck mentalist using his abilities to scam tourists, and Jack Wilder is essentially a nobody using his skills to rob people.
In the first film, the magic is used in a practical way to execute the heist. The Horsemen's live show is a vehicle for them to pull off each phase of the heist. The filmmakers can slip in magic tricks to entertain the audience and move the story forward at the same time. The film settles into a fun pattern of dazzling the audience with tricks, and then showing how that progresses the story by explaining the magic with the antagonist, Thaddeus Bradley.

In contrast, the second movie puts in magic for no reason. The Henley replacement character is introduced in a scene where she has broken into Atlas's house. She too is introduced doing magic, but the only person there is Atlas so it feels unnatural. It's unclear why she'd be doing it and it segues into a scene where Atlas repeatedly tries to tie her up with ropes and she continually escapes. It just feels like a contrived set up to show off the tricks.

Jack Wilder's character is maybe the only one they don't actively deprecate, but the framing of his character lowers his status. In the first one, he's sort of a wild card roguish character that comes in handy when the other members of the team don't expect it. He is never portrayed as lacking in skill: he is on stage performing with the rest of them throughout the film. In this film, he has become a mentalist protege and his skills that were interesting in the first one get put on the shelf. He still throws cards at people constantly, but his lock picking is relegated to one scene where he wiggles the chip out of the computer. Otherwise he just tried to use mentalism and mostly fails.
Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) also has a complete 180 on his character. In the previous one he is the mastermind, but this time he doesn't know what's going on. Ultimately, his whole life was a lie and everything that happened in the first movie is completely devalued.
### Devaluing the Original
In the service of plot twists, this movie basically destroys everything set up in the original film. The main twist of the film is that Thaddeus Bradley was secretly an important member of The Eye and someone who originally worked with Dylan Rhodes' father. This completely ruins the point of the first movie. Everything they did was to enact revenge on the people that had wronged Shrike. Also if Thaddeus is a major member of The Eye and Dylan doesn't know that, then Dylan's position in The Eye is seriously undermined.

I know that naming wouldn't make much sense in the context of the film, but neither did _Now You See Me_ apart from being related to magic. _Now You Don't_ is still equally related to magic and is the _obvious_ continuation of the phrase.
Maybe they were just being optimistic and realized that by choosing _Now You Don't_ it would locked them into just 2 movies. If you were to make a third movie you'd have to come up with something totally unrelated. Still, _Now You Don't_ just seems superior in every way to _Now You See Me 2_

## Recommendation
I have seen _Now You See Me_ many times and still haven't gotten bored of it. At a base level, it is a fun crime movie with lots of twists and turns. Layered on top of that, the filmmakers put a lot of effort into making the magic tricks they depict realistic. Even if you ignore the plot, there is all the entertainment of a regular magic show.

The third heist seems straightforward enough, but the point of it was to frame Thaddeus Bradley. To do this, they fill his car with all the money they've stolen, but it's so stuffed-full that it is literally exploding out of all the windows and doors. It's done in such a ridiculous way that it's clear he couldn't actually be responsible. There'd be no possible way of escaping from the scene of the crime with his car in that condition.
In summation, they would've been stopped in their tracks after the first heist. If they _magically_ did get out of jail after the first heist, the second heist would've been reversed or impossible even with the security questions. Finally, they wouldn't have succeeded in framing Thaddeus in the way they went about it. At the end of the day only the bank in France is likely to feel the lasting effects of what they did and that's only if it doesn't have insurance.

## Recommendation
I found this movie very charming and would certainly recommend it. I am a sucker for Wes Anderson films and this was no exception. **The French Dispatch** is very funny without many outright jokes and is visually pleasing in the standard Wes Anderson style. It is made up of several view points and individual stories with a binding narrative that pulls things together just well enough that the movie as a whole feels coherent.

The story is told in the setting of a section of the magazine, but also in retrospective as spoken by the author on the set of a talk show. The actual content of the story has aspects of live action and cartoon. The cartoon scenes feel nested within the live action for a total depth of 4 levels removed from the viewer. It just makes things a little difficult to follow. That style of storytelling can work: I loved [_If on a Winter's Night a Traveler_](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/374233.If_on_a_Winter_s_Night_a_Traveler) by _Italio Calvino_ which relies heavily on this nesting of view points, but the first chapter of that book is incredibly jarring as you get accustomed to the style.
The section isn't long enough to have time to get over that jarring feeling or to orient yourself. As a stand alone short it might work, but its presence in this larger narrative makes it feel especially awkward tonally. This discordance is the main reason I feel this movie is more of a 4/5 than a perfect [5/7](https://www.dictionary.com/e/memes/5-7/).

## Recommendation
Recommending Studio Ghibli movies is pretty easy, and this is no exception. The art and music are both excellent and the story is cute and light hearted. It's difficult to give specific reasons for watching the movie without getting into spoilers because the content of the film is what gives it the atmosphere that makes me want to recommend it.

### Perfect Score?!
I think I should justify my 5/5 rating. I will talk a bit about my rating system at the end, but this movie also transcends all of the other films I've reviewed up to this point. I think it really is art, whereas many of the other movies I've written recommendations for are entertainment more as a business than an artform.

This movie works on an animation level in that the art is not only skillful, it's iconic. The number of scenes that I recognized even though I'd never watched the movie before attests to the fact that the vibe has become pervasive in certain circles. In particular, I recognized whole scenes that have been reused in city pop and lofi music videos.

Additionally, the story is good enough that it pushes it over the edge from a 4/5 to a full 5/5 for me. I should reiterate that I don't consider a 5/5 to be perfect. If you think of my scoring system as how likely I am to recommend it, then a 5/5 is a perfect recommendation, not a perfect review. I will basically unconditionally recommend to anyone that they should see this movie!
### Lofi Girl
There are several scenes in the movie when Shizuku is studying that look _very_ similar to the [Lofi Girl](https://www.youtube.com/c/LofiGirl). I turns out that originally that channel used scenes from this movie as the backdrop for the Lofi music and only updated it to an original character after the channel was facing copyright issues. [1]

This movie includes the Japanese version of the song _Country Road_. Ever since this movie came out that song has been pretty popular in Japan, which makes me really happy for some reason.
The first time I ever heard country road was when a group of people sang it on the back of a bus I was on in northern Canada. I was literally on a country road at that time and I think when I hear the song I'm transported back there. There's something about this song that engenders feelings of friendship and melancholy at the same time. For whatever reason, it resonates with people and I'm happy to see that it works just as well in Japanese!
