Sherlock Holmes Research Document

I want to set out to answer the question, "when was Sherlock Holmes published", knowing that the answer should be multiple dates and potentially multiple dates for individual stories if installments were released over time.

I'd like to get answers to these questions, but I'd also like for them to be corroborated in multiple ways before I present them as facts on my site. If I can find at least 3 distinct sources of the information that I can consider valid, then I'll post it.

The Dates

Acceptable Date Justifications:

  • In Publication (IP): On the document containing the work itself (this is like the gold standard).
  • Earliest Newspaper Advertisement (ENA): The argument being that the clipping is valid from a given newspaper on a given date from a trustworthy source and that it's the earliest a layman at the time would've been likely to see it and also that if it's advertised it must be available.
  • Unverified Trusted Source (UTS): Something like a bibliography or a physical book being used as a justification which I haven't independently verified.

November 21st 1887: ENA This was released on November 21st 1887 in Beeton's Christmas Annual.

A Scandal in Bohemia
